Review:

The Red division offered GAC fans some exciting basketball this past season. The GAC Red is what it is: a below average conference that has very little hope of making it out of districts. Despite that sad reality, there were some surprises during the season. I think most people expected Lake Fenton to be near the top of the conference, but that didn’t happen. Instead it looked as if Goodrich would run away with the title, but not without a much improved Lakeville taking their shots. Their district match-up may have had the most tantalizing ending of any high school game all season. Mount Morris provided some upsets and Kevin Ware put on a few shows. All in all, a pretty entertaining season, even if the basketball is a tier below other class B conferences.

Durand

The Railroaders return some good talent from last season. The perimeter will be a source of strength with 5’9” senior Corey Burrow returning at point guard. Juniors like 5’8” Trevor Montroy and 5’11” Patrick Robinson will round out the backcourt and 6’1” junior Chad Sleeper will provide depth. Nick Anderson, a 6’2” junior, is strong inside and 6’1” junior Ty Demo is possibly the team’s top athlete. Expect a quicker, faster Durand that will rely more on its guard-play.

Goodrich

The Martians are set to take over the conference. They return an awful lot of talent. The perimeter is loaded with 6’0” junior Caleb Jones [right], 5’7” junior Robert Short and 6’1” sophomore Andrew Patrick. Matt Cramb, a 6’3” senior, is the team’s top athlete and a real match-up problem. Inside, 6’5” senior, Jake McGinnis is a tank that will have little trouble carving out space and junior Ben Ike will provide some added size at 6’7”. Joe Boisture, a 6’4” sophomore, might be the best long term prospect for the Martians with his size and wing skill. A Davison transfer in 6’1” senior Colin Angle will make a nice addition to this squad. They will be the team to beat.

Lake Fenton

The Blue Devils’ brutal season may be mirrored by next year’s team. They return an athletic squad with some decent size, but no real impact players. Jake Kirk, a 5’10” senior, and DaQuan Horn, a cat-quick 5'10" junior, will likely be the team’s starting guards. Matthew Taneyhill and Lucas Hasenfratz, a pair of 6’3” seniors, will be solid at the forward spots. Taneyhill, in particular, will likely be one of the top players in the conference. Kyle Showers, a 6’5” senior, is a strong, bouncy option inside.

Lakeville

They don’t return too much, but Justin Streichert may be one of the conference’s better players. The 6’3” senior can get it done inside and allow the inexperienced perimeter to make some mistakes. A pair of 5’10” seniors Jacob Johnson and Nick Strong will run the backcourt. Nate Haynes, a 6’3” senior, and Matt Ashworth, a 6’1” senior, will probably round out the starting line-up.

Montrose

The Rams were in a rebuilding year last season yet were competitive and return the bulk of their rotation. Cody Groulx, 6’2” senior post, is a good athlete and will be solid inside, while 6’2” senior Corey Hargraves will work nicely next to him. The perimeter will be young, but tough with 6’0” junior sharp-shooter Preston Taylor, but suffer a setback with the transfer of 5’11” sophomore William Sams. They won’t challenge Goodrich, but they’ll be in the mix.

Mount Morris

Coach Long lost his top players from last season, but returns some nice talent in athletic 5’11” senior Giles Hart and 5'8" senior point guard Steve Perryman. A late season JV pull-up in 6'1" junior Jarrell Day will be solid down low, along with 5'11" senior Todd Reimend. Nick Mckinstry, a 5'7" junior, will be a nice addition from the JV.
