Mid-Michigan Midseason Report
By Gavin Raath 20 January 2008 greatlakeshoops.com
A look at where we are at this point in the season compared to what we predicted in the preseason. Let the debate begin...

Class A
1. Saginaw Arthur Hill [preseason number three] Only loss to Muskegon Heights. Signature wins over Saginaw, Romulus and Oak Park. If anyone cares to check, I had Arthur Hill beating Saginaw in my conference-by-conference rankings over the summer. Theyre tough at every position and they have guys that are still improving like Mike Schaff and John Edwards. I dont think its likely that they will sweep the High, but they have a good chance.
2. Saginaw [preseason number one] Only loss to Saginaw Arthur Hill. Signature wins over Midland, Midland Dow, Detroit Country Day, Detroit Northwestern, Romulus and Toledo St. Johns. The High is smaller, but just as tough as last year. The Trojan press is as good as there is and all the guys they needed to replace were with the likes of Courtney Washington and Will Marlow. Draymond Green is still the most talented player in the state. Daniel West is up there with him in terms of talent. I cant wait for January 24.
3. Holt [preseason number four] Only loss to East Lansing. Signature wins over Jackson, Haslett, Okemos and Lansing Eastern. Theyve got a great perimeter and guys like 66 sophomore Cole Darling and 63 senior Tom Brandenburg are starting to provide a solid post. If the post can match the perimeters strength, look out.
4. Jackson [preseason number five] Only loss to Holt. Signature wins over East Lansing, Grand Ledge, Okemos and Lansing Eastern. Theyve got a strong post, but a green perimeter [opposite from Holt]. Daniel Hall, a 62 junior, is a guy that Jackson desperately needs to step up.
5. Lansing Sexton [preseason number eight] Only loss to Battle Creek Central. Signature wins over Muskegon Heights and Lansing Eastern. This team is built to run with a great perimeter attack, but weak against teams with height [Battle Creek Central]. Drew Valentine is becoming a man among boys. Should be a great game when Waverly comes to town.
6. Grand Ledge [preseason unranked] Losses to Okemos and Jackson. Signature win over East Lansing and Lansing Waverly. Joe Estrada and Jon Horford are nice surprises from the JV last year, but Jordan Schafer is the real engine behind these guys. Sneaking into the horse race for the CAAC Blue.
7. East Lansing [preseason unranked] Losses to Jackson and Grand Ledge. Signature wins over Holt, Lansing Eastern and DeWitt. Im not sure exactly how theyre managing to be so
competitive, yet here they are. Charlie Woods has been torching
teams and others like junior Eric Smith and 65 senior Timmy Cawood
have been serviceable. Coaching is the biggest reason for their success.
The Grand Ledge hick-up is confusing. 8. Flint Carman Ainsworth [preseason number two] Losses to Clarkston and Grand Blanc. Signature win over Flint Powers Catholic. Arguably the most talented team in the state from top to bottom, but seem to dumb it down with zone defenses and a motion offense. One thing to note is that in the two years that they went to the Breslin, they were defeated in the regular season by Clarkston. This is still a very good team.
9. Lapeer East [preseason number ten] Losses to Davison, Flint Northwestern and Swartz Creek. Signature win over Holly and Lapeer West. Theyre here to give some representation to the Metro and because there isnt another team that really stands out. Despite their losses, East is talented. Dan Elliott has improved significantly and 65 senior Steve Wilmers needs to catch his fire. Point guard play may be an issue.
10. Midland [preseason number nine] Losses to Flint Central, Saginaw, and Nouvel Catholic Central twice. Signature wins over Midland Dow, Ypsilanti and Beecher. Steve Bells dark horse team in class A. Just a good, efficient group of guys. Im beginning to scratch my head over the Nouvel losses. Brandon Cranes rapid improvement could spell trouble for everyone over the next two years.
Class A notes
Flint Central They're is starting to look good. Tough wins over Beecher, Davison and Midland are steps in the right direction for this talented, but young team under the direction of Coach Chaffer.
The Flint Metro The Flint Metro is pretty much exactly what we predicted, at least in terms of standings. Theyre good competitive games, but dont exhibit a ton of basketball talent.
Flint Northern I wasnt sure if Northern would win a game without DChawn Glover and Cyhiahn Williams, but the Vikings are actually competitive. Ive always had a hunch that Northern was just loaded with ball players. JoeMar Black and Michael Martin are tearing up the city series thus far.
Flint Southwestern The Knights need a point guard, any point guard. Preferably Anthony Crater.
Flushing They performed well in the CAGE league, but cant get much going in the season. Rodney Anderson is starting to turn the corner. That could be a Cardinal sign for the program.
Lansing Eastern Theyre way better than I expected. The conferences gateway team.
Midland Dow Losses to Midland, Saginaw and Flushing. No real signature win. Who is Spencer Jennings? Probably the best first-year varsity player in the area. Dow is just a tough team. Guys like David Magno and Brad Ostergren are fighters. Coach Mac does it again, but the meat of their schedule is just ahead.
Mount Pleasant [preseason number six] Does one player truly make that big of a difference? After Trey Zeiglers injury, the Oilers have yet to achieve a win [of course they cant secure one with him either]. And we had them sixth in the preseason. Whoops.
Saginaw Heritage Saginaw Heritage is in the right direction. Theyre small and young, but scrappy and hovering around .500.
Class B
1. Frankenmuth [preseason number eight] No losses. Signature wins over class A Flint Southwestern, Saginaw Buena Vista, class A Holly, Birch Run and twice over Bridgeport. How do these guys do it? Its a little bit of great coaching and a lot of great play from Brad Redford and company. Ryan Keith stepping up in a big way this season.
2. DeWitt [preseason number nine] Only loss to class A East Lansing. Signature win over Fowlerville and Haslett. This should be a big year for DeWitt. Lots of experienced seniors and they got their win over rival Haslett. Brandon Binkley is becoming an intriguing college guard prospect.
3. Lansing Waverly [preseason number two] Losses to class A Grand Ledge and Jackson Northwest. Signature win over class A Okemos and Lansing Eastern. Zach Saylor, a 6'8" senior, is the best big man in the area and without him, Waverly is a bad team, as evidenced by its recent loss to Jackson Northwest. The big man has to be on the floor.
4. Goodrich [preseason number five] Loss to New Lothrop. Signature win over class A Grand Blanc, class A Ortonville-Brandon, Flint Hamady and Burton Bentley. Young and talented team, but aren't tested enough in the GAC. Colin Angle stepped into the starting point guard role this season and has been a real impact player for the Martians thus far. Will likely finish with a one-loss season, but probably won't make it out of their district. But, if ever there was a year...
5. Hemlock [preseason unranked] Only loss to Michigan Lutheran Seminary. Signature wins over Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central, Ithaca, Alma and Midland Bullock Creek. The MLS loss is confusing if not embarrassing, but it's hard not to honor a one-loss team. Justin Vondette is killing it and they have the size to compete with anyone. Young team that doesnt play afraid.
6. Lansing Catholic Central [preseason number seven] Losses to class A Holt and Reese. Signature wins over Lakewood, class A Okemos, Williamston and Haslett. They've had some problems with injuries and eligibility, but they're starting to look like the team that dominated the CAAC-3 last year. Kudos to the guys that have stepped up in the absence of Max Gover and Mike Repovz--namely Michael Murray, Pat Duda and Austin Nichols.
7. Flint Powers [preseason number one] Losses to class A teams Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Detroit Country Day, Detroit Southeastern, Grand Blanc and Flint Carman Ainsworth. Signature wins over Flint Northwestern, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, class A Davison and class A Ypsilanti. Will be much-improved once 65 senior Xavier Walker becomes eligible. Hell give them their best chance on the boards, an area where theyve been suspect. Every loss has been a close one. Powers is at its best with the ball in Tyler Moreland's hands.
8. Haslett [preseason number four] Losses to class A Holt, Lansing Catholic Central and DeWitt. Signature win over Fowlerville. Always a tough defensive team, but lost yet again to LCC and DeWitt seems to have passed them by. May not have the athletes to match the other top tier class B schools. Never count out the Vikings and their coach, Rob Porritt.
9. Birch Run [preseason number ten] Losses to Frankenmuth and Unionville Sebewaing Area. Signature wins over Millington and Bridgeport. The wheels kind of fell off after the Christmas break. Jordan Duby is still one of the best players in the area and 6'5" junior Dakotah Ellis is talented, but they'll need more to get out of their district.
10. Fowlerville preseason number six] Losses to Haslett, class A Hartland and DeWitt. No signature wins. This was supposed to be the year. Oh well. Injuries have hurt them, but the two key guys are still there: Sean Romsek and 6'4" senior Joe Lane.
Class B notes
Bridgeport Losses to Frankenmuth, twice, and Birch Run. Signature win over Millington and Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central. Derrick Davis, a 6'4" sophomore, is one of the top big men in the area. Bridgeport has some additional talent in 6'4" junior Earvin Burton, but he has yet to reach his potential. The perimeter is solid, but nothing spectacular.
Flint Northwestern [preseason number three] Losing record. Wins over class A Flint Central, class A Lapeer East, Beecher, and Saginaw Buena Vista. They're better than their record shows. They have some good wins and only lost to the big boys. Their 20-point win over Lapeer East is deceptive, as East played without its best player.
Class C
1. Reese [preseason unranked] Undefeated with a signature win over class B power, Lansing Catholic Central, albeit without their best player and over Unionville-Sebewaing Area. Have passed every test so far with flying colors. Ty Graham is the star, but Isaac Zimmer gave them their biggest win of the season. Chock-full of unselfish players who can shoot the rock. The Rockets are making us look stupid.
2. Bath [preseason number five] Undefeated with a signature win over Carson City-Crystal and a blowout over Saranac. Eli Redman may be the top player in class C, but his teammates are stepping up. Mark Schneider, Mike Hawkins and Andrew May provide balance.
3. Albion [preseason unranked] Losses to class A Lansing Everett and Coldwater. Signature wins over Detroit Northwestern, Hillsdale and Leslie. Durant Crum is having a great year, but it was 63 senior Charles Lawler that elevated them over Detroit Northwestern. They look dangerous.
4. Carson City Crystal [preseason number four] Losses to class A Port Huron North and Bath. Signature wins over Pewamo-Westphalia and a thumping over Saginaw Nouvel. Sean Jones may be on his way to becoming dominant after his game against a big Nouvel. Thats a huge win. Cory Schneider is a fantastic guard and their deep inside with Logan Mills, Tyler Williams and Tyler Delap.
5. Brown City [preseason unranked] Only loss to Reese. Signature wins over class B Capac and Harbor Beach. Flying somewhat under the radar in the GTC East. The Green Devils didn't return much from last year, but the guys that remained are proving to be pretty good.
6. Flint Hamady [preseason number seven] One loss to class B Goodrich. No real signature win. Fast and aggressive team that has some holes inside, but seniors Demarkus Jackson and Brian Echols are as good as it gets on the perimeter. Darius Brady is starting to turn it around. Sophomore Roy Jackson is a name to remember for the future.
7. Pewamo-Westphalia [preseason number eight] Only loss is to Carson City-Crystal. Signature win over Saranac. Balanced and deep team. Will always struggle against teams with size, but are tough on the perimeter. The return of Chad Piggott from injury is a big shot in the arm.
8. Ithaca [preseason unranked] Losses to St. Louis and class B Hemlock. Signature win over a hot class B Ovid-Elsie and Blanchard-Montabella. Kyle Oosterhoff is this teams leader, but the more well known name on this team is 65 senior Cory Radak. Radak is solid, but needs to step up the way Oosterhoff has.
9. Stockbridge [preseason unranked] Losses to Albion and Parma Western. Signature wins over Hillsdale, Lansing Christian and Leslie. One of the most improved programs this season. Young team that's getting wins over teams they're not expected to beat. They should be around for awhile.
10. Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central [preseason number two] Losses to class B Detroit Community, class B Hemlock, class B Bridgeport and Carson City Crystal. Signature wins over class A Bay City Western and twice over class A Midland. The CCC loss was bad. Great teams arent supposed to get blown out like that. May miss the leadership of Tim Ryan and Mike Kessler more than expected. Still a very talented team, but seems to be missing something. Warren Wood will get these boys turned around--count on it.
Class C notes
Beecher [preseason number three] Losses to class A Midland, class B Flint Northwestern, class A Flint Central, class B Muskegon Heights and class A West Bloomfield. Signature wins over class A Flushing, class A Flint Northern and Burton Bentley. Lost to Northwestern, then thumped a team that beat Northwestern. Balanced with studs like Janero Walker, Taron Boose and Simeo Overall. Dominique Allen, a 64 senior, is starting to play to his potential. A bad record against good competition, including a recent near-miss against class D Genesee Christian, has them out of the top ten.
Burton Bentley [preseason number nine] Losses to Beecher and class B Goodrich. No real signature win. Patrick Ellison, a 65 senior, will not finish the year with a torn ACL, but transfers Lauren Jones and Logan McKenna have been stepping up. Jermaine Wyatt, a 62 junior, has been a nice surprise.
Hillsdale Losses to Albion and Stockbridge. Signature win over Leslie. The state AP really seems to like these guys and any time a class B team moves down to C, it could make for good year come playoff time. They're balanced and have a very good point guard in junior Mitchell Gabreile.
Laingsburg [preseason number six] We were way off on these guys. Evidently Nathan Rourke was more important than we gave him credit for. They're big, have a few good players and a great coach, but can't seem to win.
Saginaw Buena Vista [preseason number one] Three losses to two very good class B programs and a very good one in class A. Signature win over class B Freeland and class B Flint Northwestern. They play an incredibly tough schedule, but always compete, no matter the class. Torian Oglesby, a 66 senior, is a stud with some sick hops. Transfer Joe Bond is a pleasant surprise and Devonte Jackson is a great pure point guard. They'll be ready come March, and may still be the best C team in mid-Michigan.
Saranac Losses to Bath, Pewamo-Westphalia and Lakeview with no real signature win. Escaped some close calls against some class D opponents. Still a surprise at this point. Nick Wigfield and 63 senior Kyle Kosten lead, and youngster Curtis Westbrook is making great contributions.
St. Louis Losses to class B Shepherd, St. Charles and Carrollton. Signature win over Ithaca. Im not sure how they beat Ithaca, but this undersized team is as tough as ever. Rufus Wehgar, a 510 senior, is having a spectacular season and may be the toughest cover in-conference.
Unionville Sebewaing [preseason number ten] Losses to Reese and Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port. Signature win over class B Birch Run. Doing what USA does: win. Balanced and deep. Back-to-back losses has them out of the top ten.
Class D
1. New Lothrop [preseason number one] Loss to class B Durand. Signature win over Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart and class B Goodrich. Balanced and disciplined. Their only loss happened with center Brian Sheridan injured. Ryan Praski is the GAC's top player.
2. Webberville [preseason number three] Loss to class C Pewamo-Westphalia. Another team that's balanced from top to bottom. They don't possess a great win, but played PW extremely close. This is Coach Trumpour's best chance.
3. Lansing Christian [preseason number eight] Losses to class C Leslie and class C Stockbridge. DeOndre Callahan is one of the top players in class D and Mike Garza is one of the most improved players in the state. The battle with Webberville will be telling.
4. Michigan Lutheran Seminary [preseason unranked] Losses to class C Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central, class C Ithaca, class C St. Charles, class B Alma and class C St. Louis. Signature wins over class B Hemlock and rival class C Saginaw Valley Lutheran. Joe Lindloff is a savvy senior and Josh Byers is a tough guy inside. The Hemlock win may be the biggest win of any class D program this season.
5. Fowler [preseason number two] Losses to class C programs Leslie, Carson City-Crystal, Saranac and Pewamo-Westphalia. Signature win over Portland St. Patrick. Well-coached team that knows how to use its weapons. Should win another district title.
6. Portland St. Patrick [number ten] Losses to class C programs Carson City-Crystal, Pewamo-Westphalia, Saranac and Bath, and Fowler. Like Fowler, St. Patrick gets pounded on during the regular season by top notch class C schools. Should ensure them a good playoff run.
7. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart [preseason number five] Losses to class C Bad Axe, class C Blanchard-Montabella, New Lothrop and class C Traverse City St. Francis. Signature win over Bay City All Saints. The four losses in a row hurt. Alex Wood suffered an injury during that skid which surely hurt their chances.
8. Bay City All Saints [preseason number four] A losing record, but against mainly class C and D schools. Signature wins over class B Bay City John Glenn, class C Carrollton and class C Saginaw Valley Lutheran. They play a tough schedule so that explains their poor record. Against class D competition, they should be monsters.
9. Genesee Christian [preseason number six] Losses to Webberville, Oakland Christian, class C Beecher and International Academy of Flint. Signature win over International Academy of Flint. Balanced and skilled from top to bottom. Not overly talented, but they may have enough to make some noise in March. Senior Zac Goodspeed is starting to emerge as the Soldiers' top guard.
10. International Academy of Flint [preseason number seven] A losing record. Signature wins over Genesee Christian and class B Durand. Another class D school with a brutal schedule. No home court makes it difficult to have a winning record. Athletic team that's starting to turn things around. Senior guard Tyler Wilson should be first team all-state.
Class D note
Morrice [preseason number nine] We've always pulled for these guys, but their recent loss to Lansing New Covenant Christian is hard to forgive. If they can't do well this year, then we're not sure when they will. |
